Introduction

Kanakadasa occupies a distinct place in the cultural and social history of Karnataka. As a philosopher and social thinker, he has greatly influenced the contemporary history of Karnataka. Although belonging to 16th century Karnataka, Kanaka’s literary expressions and cultural concerns have always found new meanings and new orientations in our time. It is in the light of the contemporary relevance of Kanaka, that the Government of Karnataka established the Kanakadasa Adhyayana Peeta and Kanakadasa Research Centre in Mangalore University.

For the last several years, both Kanakadasa Adhyayana Peeta and Kanakadasa Research Centre have engaged in multifarious activities in order to spread and popularized the ideas and concerns that Kanakadasa represented. These activities include publication of research papers and books on Kanaka, organization of seminars, Conference and workshop  on issues and themes concerning  Kanaka and the Bhakthi movement. The Kanakadasa Adhyayana Peeta as well as the Kanakadasa Research Centre has together organized one major National Seminar, one International Conference and a good number of  dissemination lecture in different affiliated colleges of   Mangalore University as well as  other Universities like Kannur University, Mysore University, Dharwada University, Bangalore University, Kuvempu University, Tumakur University and the outside the state are  Mumbai University, Madras University, Kuppam University and Osmania University.  Lectures have also been given at public organization. Besides this, programmes like ‘Kanaka Keerthana’’ and ‘Kanaka Gangothri were also  organized primarily to facilitate, encourage and popularize Dasa Sahithya among communities of people in and around  the University. Teachers, administrative staff, students and others have eagerly participated in large number in these programmes.

This year the decennial year of Kanakadasa Adhyanana Peeta we have organized several programmes and conferences.
