Mangalore varsity to launch green initiatives

  • Mangalore University is planning to set up a vermi-compost unit to manage waste in a better way, Vice-Chancellor K Byrappa has said.
  • Highlighting the new initiatives of the university at a press conference on the campus at Konaje on Wednesday, he said the waste management project would be taken up in association with the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.
  • As part of its drive for a green campus, the university plans to install solar panels on the campus. A detailed project report has been prepared for the purpose, he said.
  • The university is also planning to implement rainwater harvesting facility.
  • As a part of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, campus cleaning activities are undertaken on the third Friday of every month.

Research centre

  • The university has decided to set up an advanced research centre at Belapu village in Udupi district, the Vice-Chancellor said.
  • The university has chalked out programmes and workshops to strengthen the industry-institute interaction. The university will appoint more professors in various departments to motivate students to take up research and to guide young teachers.
  • An IPR (intellectual property right) facilitation centre and a skill development centre are also being planned. A chair in the languages of North-East States is also under consideration, Byrappa said.
