Introduction

The Post Graduate course in Social Work was started in 2003-04, under the Mother Department of Sociology. The Government of Karnataka Vide letter No.ED/10/UDS/2015 dated 10-05-2016 has up graded the M.S.W. course as full pledged Department of Post Graduate Studies and Research in Social Work. The Department of Social Work offers the MSW Programme offering 5 Specialization namely-

The students have to opt for one of the following five specializations:

• CD          –Community Development
• MPSW   – Medical and Psychiatric Social Work
• HRM      – Human Resource Management
• GSM      – Geriatric Social Work
• SWAC   – Social Work in Addiction Counselling

From 2010-11 Mangalore University had introduced Choice-Based Credit System under which Social Work Students can study and interdisciplinary subject of their choice. An intensive curriculum is designed to impart the theoretical knowledge and practical training for Social Work students. Besides, the Department is offering Ph.D Programme and consultancy services too.

Special Features of the Course

A number of workshops, awareness camps, rural camps, etc have been conducted by the students and staff in different organizations and villages

Department had organized two National Conference sponsored by ICSSR New Delhi and a 10 Days workshops on Research Methodology for Research Scholars sponsored by  ICSSR New Delhi. Department also conducts on regular basis Medical camps, Awareness camps on AIDS, Domestic Violence, Alcoholism, drugs, etc.

Department also arranges special lectures to commemorate the Social important Days like Social Workers Day, International Women’s Day, World AIDS day etc.
