About the Department

The department of Industrial Chemistry was started as a M. Sc. course in Industrial Chemistry from the academic year 2009-2010 under the Department of Chemistry. From the day of 02.01.2015 the course has recognized as an Individual Department. It is unique of its kind as the Department content comprises of academic and industrially important components and is intended to produce industrially and academically trained manpower to take up position of chemists or scientists in an industry or academic institution. The course comprises of four semesters with a total duration of two years. The basic aspect of chemistry is included in the curriculum of 1st semester and industrially relevant chemistry aspects   in the 2nd and 3rd semesters. As the University has opted for Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), the student has the option to select one of the papers of his/her interest, form other disciplines, during the third semester of the course. The 4th semester of the course is fully devoted to a project work in an industry where the candidate gets first hand information about the industry apart from special training in industry.

The curriculum for the Department is framed by well experienced chemistry teachers of the universities and   experts from industries. Added advantage of the course is the provision for project work in an industry during the 4th semester of the course, where the candidate gets first hand information about the industry apart from special training in industry. In addition, as a part of the curriculum, training to operate sophisticated instruments in an industry is provided to   students during the   third semester of the course apart from the fourth semester industrial training.  The department has established very good rapport with several mega industries located in Mangalore, Mysore, Bangalore, Chennai, Goa, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Gujarat etc. Hence, there are ample   opportunities   for the students to get suitable placement after completion of the course. Majority of the students joined Industries and institutions after their post graduation.

The course has reasonably equipped three student laboratories. Presently the course is managed by two permanent teaching faculty, highly experienced academicians from reputed academic institutions, scientists from industries, guest faculty and temporary non-teaching staff. The present intake for the course is only 30 and there is lot of demand for the increase in intake. The quality of the course can be further improved by introducing more optional special papers, recruiting required number of teachers and non-teaching staff and providing enough laboratory and class room facility. Therefore keeping all these in view it is planned to increase the intake to 48, strengthen the course by adding additional elective papers and set up the R&D laboratories.
