Department of Physics

Introduction

The Department of Physics was established in 1968 as a Post Graduate Centre, University of Mysore, at KREC (now NITK), Surathkal. Subsequently, the Department was shifted to Mangalagangotri Campus in 1972. Since the establishment of Mangalore University in September 1980, the Department was offering M Sc course with Electronics as specialization, M Phil and Ph D courses. During 1983-86 two more specializations, viz., Solid State Physics and Nuclear Physics were added. In 1995, Radiation Physics was introduced as another specialization. The Department has been fully equipped with basic infrastructural facilities for academic and research programs. It is now running two years M Sc Course with an intake of 65 students offering Condensed Matter Physics, Electronics and Nuclear Physics as special subjects. The Department has produced about  1500 M Sc graduates, 15 M Phil graduates and more than 100 Ph D’s  during the last 46 years.

As an expansion of the academic program, the Department had started a new Course in Materials Science in 1988 as a division and it became an independent Department in 1995. The Department has also started M Sc course in Electronics (Semester Scheme) in 1994 in collaboration with reputed Electronics Industries and National Laboratories. The Division subsequently became an independent Department in 2005.  M Sc Radiation Physics course was started during 2007 and an MOU has been signed between Mangalore University and Texas A & M University, USA for a collaborative research programme. The Department is funded by DST-FIST and UGC-SAP. At present Department has 9 Faculty members, 110 M.Sc. students and 56 research scholars.

Many of our students have passed the UGC-NET, GATE, SLET and other competitive exams and are working in national and international institutions. The Department has several research programmes in collaboration with other Universities and Institution in India and abroad. The faculty members are engaged in research programmes in the thrust areas like Nuclear, Particle, Radiation Physics, NLO materials, Positron Annihilation Studies in materials, Polymer Electrolytes, Crystal Growth & Characterization, Atmospheric Science, Amorphous Solids and Thin Films, natural and synthetic fibers and nano composites.  The Department has the necessary infrastructure facilities needed for the R & D work.  MICROTRON has been set up in the Department in September 1995 with the support of DAE.  This Centre is recognized as a Centre for Excellence by DAE and as a National Facility by DST.

The teachers have undertaken various research projects funded by agencies like UGC, DST, BRNS, DRDO, TWAS and CSIR. The faculty of the Department have collaborative research programmes with National Research Centers such as BARC, Mumbai, IGCAR, Kalpakkam, RRCAT, Indore, NSC, New Delhi, IIT Chennai, IITM, Pune, IISc, Bangalore and also with other Universities of the country. The faculty members of the Department have published more than 500 research papers in the Journals of repute and have attended many national and international symposia/conferences/seminars in India and abroad and have presented research papers.  Many of the faculty members have been awarded national and international fellowships, like BOYSCAST, Commonwealth, Sir C.V. Raman and Wighton-Titular Fellowship.
