Till now, 366 M.Sc. graduates have passed out from this department, out of which 59 graduates have secured good scores in GATE examinations.11 M.Phil,24 Ph.D. and one D.Sc. degrees have been awarded in Materials Science.Among the research scholars, five have been awarded CSIR senior research fellowships, three were awarded post doctoral fellowships abroad and one was sanctioneda YoungScientist Project from DST.About 40% of our M.Sc. graduates have gone for higher studies and obtained M.Tech / M.S./ Ph.D. degree fromreputed Institutions/ Universities in India and abroad.A good number of our students are working in R & D Laboratories, Industries, Universities and institutions around the globe.

Over the years, the faculty members of the department have been able to secure research grants to the tune of about 1.33 corers  from various central funding agencies like DOS/ISRO, DST, CSIR, UGC, NSC, AICTE, BRNS/DAE , NRB etc.  With the generous grants from the  funding  agencies, many major equipments like High Vacuum Thin Film Coating units with electron beam evaporation facility and thickness monitor, a Keithley system DMM, Differential Scanning Calorimeter (Shimadzu), Thermo Mechanical Analyser (Shimadzu), UV-Visible NIR Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu), Electrometers (Keithley), Metallurgical Microscope with CCD Camera (Kocom),  Bruker D8 advance powder X-Ray  Diffractometer with temperature attachment, Fungilab Viscometer, Muffle Furnace, Impedance Analyzer, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), Electrochemical workstation etc. could be  procured for research activities in the department.     So far, twenty two candidates  were awarded  Ph.D. degree under the guidance of Dr. Jayagopal Uchil, Dr. Manjunatha Pattabi and Dr. Vijayalakshmi Rao.  The research activities in the department have resulted in about 189 publications in reputed national and international journals.  The department has collaborative programmes with NAL, Bangalore, IISc., Bangalore, NCL, Pune, National Autonomous University of Mexico, NSC, New Delhi, BARC , Mumbai, RVCE, Bangalore etc. The collaborative  programmes with NAL and RVCE have resulted in four M.Phil and thirteen Ph.D. degrees.
