Introduction
The Dept of Economics was started in 1977as a part of the erstwhile Post Graduate Center of Mysore University. It became a full-fledged Department of Studies and Research in Economics in September 1980. The Department offers M.A, and PhD Courses in Economics.
The Department of Economics is one of leading departments in the University and State, and is committed to excellence in both teaching and research. Our members include distinguished researchers and teachers, who undertake innovative research that extends the frontiers of modern economic analysis, and our programmes are recognized for the exceptional training and scholarships. The Department of Economics, as one of the leading Research Department in Mangalore University is specialized in areas of Banking & Finance, Agriculture and Rural Development, Environmental Economics, Urban Economics, Distance Education, Govt. Subsidization Policies, Labour in unorganized sector and others. The faculty in the Department have completed so far more 30 Research Projects funded by various agencies like; Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, ICSSR, UGC and IGNOU and other agencies.
The demand for Master Progrmme in Economics and Ph.D is continuous and sustained. A special paper on ‘Economics of Insurance’ has been introduced under the Innovative Scheme of UGC programme since 2008-2009. Presently, the Department of Economics has Corporation Bank Chair funded by Corporation Bank, substantial amount of research has been done under this Chair on privatization of banks, banking sector reforms, Financing agriculture and other areas. Several Conferences, Seminars symposium, Workshops were also organized by inviting eminent economists and experts from RBI, and other reputed Research Institute. The proceedings of the conferences were published in the form of edited books.
The Faculty Members of the Department are involved in various Research and Extension activities in collaboration with the other Universities and Research Centers, such as Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, CMDR, Dharwad. The Department has collaboration with Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusion Policy, Centre for Ambedkar Studies,which are multi disciplinary research centers in the campus. The Faculty Members are also part of the projects of local government like preparation of Comprehensive District Development Report. The faculty members successfully guided 93 Ph.D. candidates and 10 M.Phil. Candidates so far.
The Department has the credit of having highest number of students passed in UGC-JRF, NET examination in Mangalore University and also in Karnataka. The students of the department are also succeeded in passing IES/KAS and other competitive exams. Some of them also succeeded in national level banking exams and found higher level of job opportunities and serving in many Nationalized Banks.
