The Post-Graduate course in Social Work was started under the Mother Department of Sociology in 2003. Students of Social Work learn the knowledge, skills and values to engage in culturally competent practice with diverse populations and communities. The students learn to critically analyse personal, familial and environmental factors affecting practice settings and practice techniques, and to advocate for those who confront barriers to achieving their fullest potentials.The MSW Course was upgraded as a full-fledged Post Graduate Department of Studies and Research in Social Work in with the assent of the Chancellor on 25-04-2016. Consequently the Mangalore University upgraded the Social Work Course giving it the Departmental Status with its notification on the 1st of October 2016.

About the Department
The Post-Graduate course in Social Work was started under the Mother Department of Sociology in 2003. Since, then the department has been offering MSW course with four major specialization such as Community Development, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations and Criminology and Correctional Administration. From 2010-2011, Mangalore University has introduced Choice Based Credit System under which social work students can study an interdisciplinary subject on their choice. An intensive curriculum is designed to impart the theoretical knowledge and practical training for social work students. Besides, the Department is offering PhD programme and consultancy service to stakeholders in Societies.
The Department has designed and incorporated a new syllabus implemented in the year 2016-17 under the choice based credit system. The New Syllabus is designed in such a way that the students are given class room instruction on theoretical aspect for 4 days in a week, and concurrent field work practicum for 2 days in various government, non-governmental organization, hospitals, industries and schools. The skill enhancement of the students is fortified through various workshops awareness programme, educational talks, study tour and rural and tribal camp which form a part of the rigorous professional training imparted to students through the revised and enhanced curriculum
The department also engages in community extension programmes with a thrust on providing succor to the underprivileged members of society and also to sensitize students to real life experience in the field of community service and social work enhancement skills
