Extension Activity in Neighbourhood Community in terms of Impact and

            Sensitising to Social Issues and Holistic Development                        

One of the important extension activities conducted by Mangalore University in the period 2014-2019 has been in the field of art.  This has been done through the N.G. Pavanje Chair in Fine Arts founded in 1998 though a private endowment to the University by Ms. Anasuya Pavanje.  In the period 2014-19, the Chair organised the following extension programmes in order to foster creativity in students, develop core competencies and bridge the world of learning and the world of skills.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY I- 2015-16:

09.11.2015 – Art Workshop and Exhibition and Painting Competition for School Children in Puttur area.

The programme was held on 09.11.2015 in association with the Department of Education, Puttur, Dr. Shivarama Karantha Baalavana Samithi, Puttur and the South Kanara Art Teachers’ Association, Mangalore. It was open to primary and high school children from government schools who come from less privileged backgrounds.370 school children participated in the painting competition.The painting competition sought to sensitise students of primary schools and high schools to social issues through their renditions of rural life.  The Lecture-Demonstration by Shri P.S. Punchithaya, Member, Karnataka Lalit Kala Academy and Kerala Lalit Kala Academy as well as the exhibition of paintings and art work by art teachers and artists of Puttur taluk provided to the students models of excellence in art and promoted their holistic development.  Societally, it brought to major organisations together, in a common effort to provide to the students from rural areas platform for personal growth.  It was also the University’s way of reaching out to the rural society through its endowment chairs, which is a special feature at Mangalore University
