Department of Economics was established in 1977 at Mangalagangothri, Mangalore, when it was P.G Center of University of Mysore. After the formation of Mangalore University in 1980, the Department of Studies and Research in Economics continued its research and teaching programmes. Since then, it is offering M.A, and PhD Courses in Economics.
The Department of Economics is one of the prestigious Departments in Social Sciences in terms of number of enrolment of students, teachers and research scholars. The Department has been one of the leading Research Institutions in Mangalore University with specialization in Banking & Finance, Agriculture and Rural Development, Environmental Economics, Urban Economics, Distance Education, Govt. Subsidisation Policies and Labour in unorganized sector and other areas. The Department has completed many Research Projects on above mentioned areas funded by various agencies like; Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, ICSSR, UGC and IGNOU.
There has been a considerable demand from the students and the research scholars for M.A. degree in Economics and Ph.D. programme. Since the academic year 2008-09 a special paper on ‘Economics of Insurance’ has been introduced under the Innovative Scheme of UGC programme.
Presently, the Department of Economics has one Chair that is Corporation Bank Chair funded by Corporation Bank. The substantial amount of research has been done under this Chair on privatization of banks, banking sector reforms, Financing agriculture and other areas. Several Conferences, Seminars symposium, Workshops were also organized by inviting eminent economists and experts from RBI, and other reputed Research Institute. The proceedings of the conferences were brought up in the form of edited books volumes.
The Faculty Members of the Department are involved in various Research and Extension activities in collaboration with the other Universities and Research Centers, such as Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, CMDR, Dharwad, The Centre for Social Exclusion and Inclusion Policy, Centre for Ambedkar Studies, Mangalore. The Faculty Members are also involved as resource persons in various projects of local government like preparation of Comprehensive District Development Report. The faculty members successfully guided about 72 Ph.D. candidates and 10 M.Phil. Candidates.
The Department has the credit of having highest number of students passed in UGC NET examination in Mangalore University and also in Karnataka. About 45 candidates have cleared UGC NET Examination during last five years. The final year M.A. degree students were also selected for jobs during campus placement interviews. Some of the students who obtain the Master Degree of the department are also succeeded in passing IES/KAS exams. Some of them also succeeded in national level banking exams and found high class job opportunities and serving in many Nationalized Banks.
