Nature & type of research
The Department has active research groups in the areas of Nuclear & Radiation Physics, Nonlinear Optics, Positron Annihilation Studies, Polymer Electrolytes, Thin Films, Nanomaterials and Nanocomposites.

Highlights of the Department
- * The first department in the state to establish a Microtron Accelerator facility for interdisciplinary research.
- * The first (and so far the only) department on the campus to receive the second phase of the DST-FIST grant.
- * Alumni of the department are placed in leading institutions such as the University of Mysore, Bangalore University, Mangalore University, Davanagere University, as well as premier institutes like IISc Bangalore, BARC Mumbai, and ISRO Bangalore.
